I’m getting to know Windsor photographers and their subjects! I saw this one in a random search for windsor + ontario + bird and I recognized Leelo right off the bat!

Enjoy this last weekend of the summer. The weather’s getting cool but it’s not too late to go for a stroll by the riverfront or in your own backyard. It’s worth it.

This photo taken down at Windsor’s riverfront totally reminds me of the scene in the Karate Kid where Ralph Macchio is trying to balance doing high kicks on an old stump. Of course there’s no perfect line in that scene compared to the one where old Mr. Miyagi gets Ralph to polish all the old cars…

Water Sport

If you try this out on the Detroit River you need to watch out for freighters. The river can get pretty busy and the big ships cannot manouver around you (if they even see you). That said, the best way to play in the river is to stay above it — even with the work of the Detroit River Cleanup it’s still awfully polluted.

Something about Sunsets

Maybe because I’m tired of winter or maybe because I’ve been daydreaming about a California vacation, I just can’t resist the recent surge of sunset pictures on flickr. Can you tell that Windsor is under snow in this picture? (Besides the ice in the river?)

Let’s Pretend it’s Summer

Let’s pretend it’s summer and that this sunset is warm.

It’s hard to believe that this photo was taken in February in cold, cold weather. I want to think that the photographer had just wandered away from a crackling campfire and that there’s a pile of picnic blankets waiting just behind.

But I know that really it’s a pile of snow and that the photographer’s fingers are probably freezing while the shot gets lined up and the picture taken. And no doubt, our brave photographer cannot wait to get back indoors.

Mysterious Foggy River

I wish I lived closer to a river or lake. I find scenes like this so calming, so peaceful. Ah well…. Since I don’t, I’m glad there are photos I can look at, knowing that the place isn’t that far from home.

This photo was taken a year ago, plus two days from today. I wonder if it looks like that again today since we’ve got another foggy morning.

Goose Bay Park

It’s time to migrate. Lately I’ve been seeing flocks of Canadian geese flying overhead in V-shapes. This photo was taken at Goose Bay Park on Windsor’s riverfront, just west of Pillette Road.

There are often a few geese that stay behind — here at this park and elsewhere. It’s not as cold as it used to be I guess.

Dancing Bear

I’ve seen this dancing bear down at Windsor’s riverfront Sculpture Garden many, many times. This photograph makes me see it in a new way. The close up brings out the bear’s playfulnessl and the lighting stops it in time — as if the bear is about to turn and run — or maybe turn back to face the camera and smile.

This is one of the reasons why I like this website so much. When I see a photo of a place I’ve been to a million times I get a sense of familiarity: the “I’ve been there!” feeling — but then because of the way the artist presents the view, I can get a completely new perspective or see something I never noticed before.

The Big Hand and the Big Apple

Windsor’s riverfront is home to the Sculpture Garden: a walking trail with a smattering of sculptures, some calming, some kooky. This giant hand has always struck me as one of the kookier.

I could never decide if this sculpture was making some sort of statement about growth hormones in food and genetic modification or if it was just a tribute to all the apple orchards that the area used to hold.

Moon Behind the Bridge

There are so many pictures of the Ambassador Bridge, which is why it is special when someone takes a photo of the bridge that makes you go “Wow”.

That’s what this one did — I remember that night and looking up for the moon because the sky was so bright. I couldn’t see it and now I know why: it was hiding behind the bridge.
