This is a trip down memory lane for me. I took this photo on Pelee Island in early summer, when I was there doing research for an oral history project.

I wish I had more time to spend on Pelee. I’d live there in a heartbeat if I could organize my life to make it possible. It’s definitely on my someday maybe list.

Look through the windows and think about what you saw this summer and what you will see between now and next summer. Picture the falling of the leaves, the snow covered ground, the buds breaking out, and the the garden back in full bloom. Where will you be a year from now?

As many times as I’ve been to Pelee Island there was something last trip that I don’t remember ever seeing before: all these caged-up sunflowers. They’re purpose, as far as I can tell, is to make hiding places and shade (and seeds?) for the pheasants that are bred here for the Island’s autumn pheasant hunt.

I love fields of sunflowers. It was a very cool surprise that day, cutting across the middle of the Island.

There’s still time to make it over to Pelee Island this year. The boat keeps running until December 15th but the sooner you get there the sooner you get to see the sights — like Hulda’s Rock.

Hulda’s Rock, originally uploaded by Darlana.

There is a legend that tells the story of the Rock.

Taken from the Pelee Island website:

An Indian Legend Of 1783
An Indian maiden, Huldah, plunged to her death in sorrow over her English husband’s broken vow to return to her.
The waves that foam and surge around the grave stone are said to chant her name for eternity. Time and the ravages of ice and water have decreased the rock to a fraction of it’s original size.

Please respect this private property. it is located on the northwest shore of Pelee Island at Sheridan Point.

I’m a bit skeptical because the rock is barely above water level — though maybe the water levels (and sea bed levels) were a lot lower back in 1783.
