A Lot of Stairs

This house is in Belle River, Ontario. I see a set of stairs facing the photographer and another on the opposite side of the house. I guess this is what you have to do if you want to divide a house into apartments – every compartment needs an emergency exit. No one would do by choice would they?

A Total Lunar Eclipse

Last night, February 20th, 2008, a lunar eclipse was visible to nearly a billion people in the Western Hemisphere, more than 1.5 billion in Europe and Africa, and about another half-billion in western Asia.

The skies were clear here making the show a great one for Windsorites. It was very cool (and literally icy cold) standing outside in pajamas watching the progress.

Prickly Prickles

Beware the prickles. They stick to your socks, cling to your pants, and tie themselves in your hair.

With the leaves gone from the branches it’s a bit easier to spot them — and Windsor parks are loaded with these. Keep in mind though that when they’re dry like this they’re also more likely to grab hold of you.

Are these the sort that Eeyore ate?

A roll of hay

Comber is another one of those little blip on the map towns. It’s north of Leamington, south of Stoney Point, west of Tilbury, and east of … well … umm … Woodslee I guess. Comber has a lot of farms. And a church. And a library. Back in 1994, someone took this picture of Bob next to some bales of hay:

I’ve always thought it would be fun to climb on one of these piles. Is it as fun as it looks? Anyone ever tried it?

Many years ago I worked at the library in Comber (never should have quit that job!) and I hear it’s yet again being considered for amalgamation with the Stoney Point/Pointe-aux-Roches branch. The farms (for now) are still there.

Farm country

The community of Pointe-aux-Roches (or “Stoney Point”) is now part of the larger area of Essex County known as Lakeshore. There’s a tiny public library and a church and a lot of farmland out this way. It’s about 45 minutes east of Windsor, along Lake St. Clair.

Stoney Point also has a Coop, an important part of a farming community. See all those grain elevators? This is where your food comes from. Next time you eat, remember to thank a farmer.

That time of year

It’s that time of year when the monarch butterflies start thinking about the long migration ahead. Soon the area, and especially Point Pelee National Park will be covered with the creatures as they prepare for the flight to Mexico where they will spend the winter.

They are especially attracted to milkweek which grows plentifully in the area but many gardeners plant Buddleja, also known as “Butterfly Bush” to attract these and other butterflies to their yards.
