Backyard ponds are a lot more common today than they were when I was a kid. Are these the fish that will stay at the bottom on the pond all winter long?

A bonus of having a pond in your backyard is all the mosquitoes that they eat.

Greenhouse Capital of Canada

Essex County has one of the longest growing seasons in Canada. It also has some of the most fertile soil in the country — a beautiful sandy loam. It makes me sad to see acre upon acre of greenhouses rendering the soil unusable. Soon, instead of being tomato capital of Canada, Leamington will be greenhouse capital.

I cannot believe I still have never made it out to John R. Park Homestead. My kids have each been there on class field trips — the best of those being for a sugar shack/cabane à sucre) at maple syrup time.

John R. Park Homestead Farm House, originally uploaded by Victoria’s Food Adventures in Windsor & Essex Coun.

The house and farm buildings were built in 1842 and have been restored to show life in the nineteenth century. It’s also on the water and there’s a boardwalk for strolls. One of these days I’m going to have to make the trek. It’s located on the shore of Lake Erie between the towns of Kingsville and Colchester at 915 County Road 50 at Iler Road. There are great directions on the ERCA website.

This is absolutely one of my favourite things to do: sit in the sunshine in a beautiful garden with a friend, a baby, and a plate of yummies. Looks like these women are enjoying it as much as I would.

NEO at Marketown

Last Saturday morning I headed over to Windsor Crossing to check out the opening of Marketown, a new outdoor market not far from home. I’d pictured a market reminiscent of Toronto’s St. Lawrence but it’s not quite there yet. At 10am there were no veggies yet only a yogurt stand and one jewellery stand but at 10:30 Natural Earth Organics was set up and I managed to pick up some eggplant, peppers, and beans (and ogle the heritage tomatoes). I try to buy local, fresh, and organic and this made it easy.

The website says they’ll be open weekends until November 2 from 10am to 6pm. I’m hoping more farmers will decide to sell their produce here.
