Discovering Thibert Farm’s pancake mix has been the highlight of the new Downtown Farmer’s Market for me. Check them out at the old bus station every Saturday — or take a trip out to The Thibert Farm in Comber.

Take a daytrip to Leamington, Ontario. If you’re coming from Windsor, just hop on Huron Church Rd and follow it after it becomes Highway 3. In about 40 minutes you’ll see signs to turn south into Leamington’s downtown. Stock up on local produce before turning around and heading home. One of my favourite shops is Lakeside Bakery on Erie Street near Seacliff Drive.

Heyyyyyyyyyyyyy!! It’s apple picking time. I love this time of year. Not only do I love apples, apple pie, apple crisp, and apple cider, this year I have a child who loves to bake. I’ll get to enjoy all the great dishes and pass on my favourite recipes.

When my kids were little they had special sweaters to wear for apple picking. You guessed it, we called them “apple picking sweaters.” They were hand knitted (usually second hand) and all the leaves on the ground would stick in the stitches because invariably they’d roll around in the grass under the trees. I hope we make time to get out to the orchard this year. Local food is the best.

Leave a link to your favourite orchard (or orchard memory) in the comments!

Essex County has one of the longest growing seasons in Canada. It also has some of the most fertile soil in the country — a beautiful sandy loam. It makes me sad to see acre upon acre of greenhouses rendering the soil unusable. Soon, instead of being tomato capital of Canada, Leamington will be greenhouse capital.

Last Saturday morning I headed over to Windsor Crossing to check out the opening of Marketown, a new outdoor market not far from home. I’d pictured a market reminiscent of Toronto’s St. Lawrence but it’s not quite there yet. At 10am there were no veggies yet only a yogurt stand and one jewellery stand but at 10:30 Natural Earth Organics was set up and I managed to pick up some eggplant, peppers, and beans (and ogle the heritage tomatoes). I try to buy local, fresh, and organic and this made it easy.

The website says they’ll be open weekends until November 2 from 10am to 6pm. I’m hoping more farmers will decide to sell their produce here.

We finished the ride here at Aleksander Estate Winery for more wine and a fabulous barbecue of local foods all grown within ten minutes of the winery.

I’ve been getting broccoli out of the garden for about 2 weeks now. The chili peppers have babies on them and there are flowers on the beans. Food tastes so good with fresh veggies from the backyard. This is me making vegetarian chili.

At the foot of the Leamington Dock you’ll find Burgess Refreshments. It’s been there as long as I can remember. I remember coming here when I was a kid waiting for the ferry to Pelee with my family. Sometimes we’d get some fries or ice cream while we were waiting and eat them on the dock.

That was a long time ago. It’s nice to see that some things last.
