About Windsor, Ontario:

Windsor is the southernmost city in Canada, located south of Detroit and the Detroit River. Windsor was first settled in 1748 as a French agricultural settlement, making it the oldest continually inhabited settlement in Canada west of Montréal. Windsor was established as a village in 1854, the same year the village was connected to the rest of Canada by the Grand Trunk Railway/CN Rail, then a town in 1858, and ultimately gained city status in 1892.

The area was first named Petite Côte (Little Coast), and later became known as La Côte de Misère (Misery Coast). Windsor’s French heritage is reflected in the many French street names such as Ouellette, Pelissier, Marentette and Lauzon. Don’t get us started on “Pierre Street.” There is a significant French speaking population in the area with many native French speakers in the Lakeshore communities of Puce, Belle River, and St. Joachim.

According to the 2001 census, the Windsor metropolitan area (including Windsor, Tecumseh, Amherstburg, LaSalle and Lakeshore) had a population of 307,877 people, 49.3% male and 50.7% female, with children under five accounting for approximately 6.3% of the resident population of Windsor. Persons of retirement age (65 and over for males and female) accounted for 14.1% of the resident population in Windsor and the average age in Windsor is 36.0 years.

Windsor attracts many immigrants from around the world. It is the fourth most diverse city in Canada with over 20% of its residents being classified as foreign-born.

Windsor claims the title “Automotive Capital of Canada” and is home to the DaimlerChrysler Canadian headquarters as well as plants for Ford, General Motors, and DaimlerChrysler. Windsor is also known as a global leader in the building of molds for plastic injection. Windsor is home to a Casino, the Great Lakes Regional Office, many rare, threatened, and endangered plant and animal species, plus plenty of artists, musicians, and writers.

Windsor has 3,000 acres of green space and a slowly growing network of bike trails. The weather is hot and humid in the summer and slushy grey in the winter with spring and fall making fleeting appearances in between sunburns and snowsuits.
