Greenhouse Capital of Canada

September 8th, 2008 · 3 Comments

Essex County has one of the longest growing seasons in Canada. It also has some of the most fertile soil in the country — a beautiful sandy loam. It makes me sad to see acre upon acre of greenhouses rendering the soil unusable. Soon, instead of being tomato capital of Canada, Leamington will be greenhouse capital.

That’s my photo up there - and it is sad to see all of those greenhouses. Fortunately, they provide needed income for many people. There also seems to be a trend to use non-chemical means of maintaining the crops grown in them.

oh! I forgot - I grew up on a greenhouse farm, which fed all of the 8 people in my family. One can find trends in all areas of life including in farming. There are far worse things to use this fertile land for than to grow more food. IE. more stores and factories, McMansions…so although it is sad to see land used up, it is still being used for farming. So it is still producing, just in a different way!
