Pelee Island Church and Graveyard

August 3rd, 2007 · No Comments

Today is Pelee Day Five. I hope you’ve enjoyed this week of photos of Pelee. If you missed the other days you can see them here:

Pelee Day One: Getting Back to Pelee
Pelee Day Two: Scudder Harbour
Pelee Day Three: Lake Henry and the Old Pelee Lighthouse
Pelee Day Four: Pelee Island Wine

Today we start with some architecture. St. Mary’s on East West Road is the oldest church on the island and it’s also one of the oldest buildings on the island. It’s been there since 1863. It’s still in use by the Anglicans on the island and is dry inside. The church is in excellent condition.

The island cemetery is at the North End and is filled with old tombstones.

This is incredible — as the tree has grown it has consumed these small stones. Every year you can see the year’s growth by how much of the stones are left visible.

The island’s official website is here. There you can find maps, travel and accommodation information and information about things to do and bring when you visit the island. There isn’t a whole lot to do, and there’s no grocery store or bank (and in case you miss the signage everywhere, don’t drink the water). That said, Pelee is an incredible place and I’ve never found another place like it. It’s best for cycling around, relaxing, and talking to people. The flora and fauna are like no other and the local people have a way of life that is so different from life on the mainland. It’s definitely worth a visit to see for yourself.

If you have questions or interesting stories to share, please post in the comments. I’d love to hear your tales or help with your trip plans if I can.
