Scudder Harbour

July 31st, 2007 · 1 Comment

Welcome to Day Two of our week of Pelee Island. You can see Day One here.

It used to be if you came from the Ontario mainland (Leamington or Kingsville) most often the ferry would take you to the North End of the island. It’s a shorter distance and the bay formed here creates a natural harbour which is what you want on days with rough water. Quite a few years back, when the island got its new ferry, the Jiimaan, the West Side dock was developed rather than the one at the North End. Some say it was to cater to the American tourists coming from Sandusky, Ohio because the West side is the short trip in that direction. It still feels strange to me to go ashore at the West Side. Since many visitors don’t see the North End dock here’s a look and an idea of what the West Side used to look like.

Can you get a sense of how quiet it is here? Here’s the marina where you can tie up for a few hours or a few days. My uncle was the harbourmaster here for many years, guiding the boaters into slips and catching lines for the ferry.

I love the peacefulness of this place. There is no hustle and bustle anywhere on the island, but if you try to compare, the West Side is the busy place. I’d rather hang out here to watch boats — which is what I did.
